CHY 4UE (2007-08)
Canadian & World Studies Department
Colonel By Secondary School
Course Syllabus: 2007-2008
This course fulfills the second installment of the I.B. Group 3 (History) curriculum programme offered at Colonel By Secondary School. Readings and classroom instruction are designed to ensure students have a broad based background in the subject of twentieth century history, with a particular concentration on Europe and Russia. Students must be familiar with the regional requirements for the I.B. examinations in History, and recognise when and where their learning over the past two years will be evaluated.
a) I.B. Examination, Group 3 (History), Paper 1
(Higher & Standard Level) -- May 2008
Paper One will take the form of a one hour exam, based entirely on the historical
experience of the Soviet Union in the Stalin Years. This exam is designed to
evaluate the student's ability to work with historical documents, think independently,
and integrate new information into an existing regimen of theory and factual
material.
Over the course of the year, students will be presented with many historical documents, including those relating specifically to the Soviet Union in the Stalin Years. Skills designed to build effective and efficient documentary analysis will be addressed.
b) I.B. Examination, Group 3 (History), Paper 2
(Higher & Standard Level) -- May 2008
To prepare for the 2007-2008 History I.B. exams, all students will be required
to address the following themes related to the study of World History in the
twentieth century
| Topic 1 | Causes, Practices and Effects of War |
| Topic 2 | Nationalist and Independence Movements, Decolonisation, and Challenges Facing New States |
| Topic 3 | The Rise and Rule of Single Party States |
| Topic 4 | Peace and Cooperation: International Organisations and Multiparty States |
| Topic 5 | The Cold War |
| Topic 6 | The State and Its Relationship with Religion and with Minorities |
Students will be required to write two essay questions, each drawn from a different thematic category listed above. Where a bi-regional comparison is sought, students will be expected to fully address the thematic question with specific reference to historical material in both Europe/Russia, and the Americas. Students should be intimately familiar with the I.B. markband used in the evaluation of the Paper 2 essay questions. See further tips on writing the Paper 2 exam.
