These are the four 'viewports'

By default, the top front and side viewports are orthographic while the perspective is 3D

This is the movie timeline. The slider bar tells you which frame you're at and how many frames you have total

GMAX Intro

This is the Gmax start screen

 

On the main toolbar the buttons we'll be using most often are:

  1. Select by name (brings up a window where you can select the object from a list of object names)
  2. Select and Move (used to move objects around in any direction, I always call it the four-way arrow)
  3. Select and Rotate (it rotates the object about a given axis)
  4. Select and Scale (there are other buttons 'underneath' it which allow you to choose a uniform or non-uniform scale)
  5. Restricts your selection to the x-axis
  6. Restricts your selection to the y-axis
  7. Restricts your selection to the z-axis
  8. Restricts your selection to the xy-plane (beneath it are the other planar combinations yz and zx)

The navigation buttons are set up like this

  1. Zoom (zooms in and out on a specific viewport)
  2. Zoom all (zooms in and out on all viewports)
  3. Zooms extents (fits the content of your movie to the size of the selected viewport)
  4. Zooms extents all (fits the content of your movie to the size of all viewports)
  5. Field of view zoom (perspective zoom, tends to leave the viewport skewed)
  6. Pan (allows you to move the contents of your viewport manually so you can see what you want to see)
  7. Arc Rotate (allows you to rotate your viewport however you want)
  8. Min/Max Toggle (makes your selected viewport take up the whole screen)
