Not only do the winners get to write history, but often governments in power attempt to modify history, often long after the fact. An excellent example of this is the Louis Riel debate going on within Canada. Some view him as a Father of Confederation and others view him as a murderer and traitor. Below are two articles which illustrate these opposing points of view as the issue came to a head in 1999 - 2000 as the Government of Canada moved to pass legislation honouring Louis Riel. After acrimonious debate, the legislation died when the 2000 election was called.
