Canada's Immigration / Refugee Policies & the 4 Democratic Values

Using the textbook (pp.164-168), answer the following questions:
 

1. Summarize Canadian policies towards immigration in the 1930s and 1940s; why did the Government enact these decisions?

2. Why did the attitude towards immigration shift after World War II?

3. Today, what three principles guide Canadian immigration policy?

4. Explain the “points system” in Canadian immigration policy.

5. Use the glossary to define the term: deported.

6. Write 3-5 sentences which define and distinguish the terms “immigrant” and “refugee”.

7. Explain the process whereby a person presents themselves to the Government of Canada as a “refugee” through to the point at which they have successfully and permanetly established themselves in Canadian society.

8. Approximately how many people claim to be refugees seeking asylum in Canada each year? (a) Approximately how many of these are confirmed and accepted as refugees?

9. How does our understanding and acceptance of Human Rights place an obligation on us to accept refugees in to Canada?  Explain with examples.

10. Write a paragraph explaining how Canadian Immigration and Refugee policies reflect the four democratic values.
