The Canadian Senate
Follow the link and read the Canadian Encyclopedia's entry on the Senate.
In your notes, answer the following
questions:
1) Record how many Senators represent each Canadian province and territory
2) What restrictions exist on who is elligable to sit as a Senator? These
rules and regulations were created in 1867; 143 years later are they still
appropriate?
3) Explain why the Senate was created in 1867.
4) Summarize the powers given to the Canadian Senate by the Constitution Act
of 1867; given the reasons for creating the Senate, are these powers too great?
too little? Explain.
5) Over the last generation, Senate reform has been a constant topic of debate.
What are some proposals for Senate reform?
6) In your opinion, should the Senate remain unchanged, reformed (and if so,
how?) or abolished altogether?
