Particle Physics Independent Assignment
- For this assignment go to http://particleadventure.org/
and press start.here
- Toggle through the pages by clicking the arrows in the top right corner.
You can also find a particular page by putting your cursor over the Chapter
titles on the left hand side.
- Read 'What is Fundamental', 'What is the World Made Of', What Holds
It Together, and 'Particle Decays and Annihilations'. (about 60 pages)
- Remember this unit is intended to be an introduction to particle physics.
Don't get all hung up on any one concept, some of the information you
don't need to know.
- After you have reviewed the web site sections indicated above review the
web page"Particle Physics Classification,
What You Need to Know"
- Next using what you learned from the particle adventure web site, what you
need to know page, the text (if needed) and the handouts, answer the following
questions
- Has an up quark ever been detected in isolation?
- In an electron positron annihilation what is the wavelength of the emitted
gamma photon? (you must find the mass of the electron from the text)
- I'm confused?, Is a proton a barion, hadron or a quark?
- Identify one difference between a muon and an electron.
- From the handouts find the electric charge of the up and down quarks.
Resolve the charge of a neutron and a proton based on the charge of the
combination of quarks which make up these two baryons.
- The colour charge is associated with what force?
- Write the symbol for the antiparticle beside each of the symbols for
the particles shown in the handout 'Elementary
Components of Matter'. You may wish to use the chart on p 985 of the
textbook to ge the information.
