An electric field differs from a gravitational field in that electric charges may be positive or negative so the direction of the force can be in the direction of the E field (for +ve charges) or opposing the E field direction (for -ve charges).
Electric field direction goes from positive charges toward the negative. In other words, the direction of the field is such that a "positive test charge" would have a force applied to it that would make it repell from the positive and attract to the negative.
