CREATIVE IDEA GENERATION RUBRIC

Thinking / Inquiry CREATIVE IDEA GENERATION	A suitable idea has been presented which attempts to solve the design problem.	Level 1 + At least two other good alternative ideas have been considered or There is evidence that the idea has been developed by at least two phases of improvement or Some combination of the first two requirements above	Level 1&2+ A decision has been made as to the Final Design The chosen idea is suitable for the purpose or is a marked improvement over existing designs. Final design idea should be realistic.	Level 1&2&3+ Criterion for the basis of the decision is clearly evident. Ideas are exceptional, well thought out, suitable and perhaps novel unique and /or marketable. A variety of methods is used to get to the chosen solution.

INDICATORS

Level 1

• This should be indicated by a brief product description and appropriate graphics on the 11x17 boards. (Both of these are requirements for entry into the competition.)

Level 2

• These ideas should be be presented in the form of sketches. When a sketch is insufficient to delineate the idea then notes are often added to the sketch.
• The more you work at an idea the more it may improve. Often several aspects or different ideas are incorporated together into a final best idea.

Level 3

• A decision has to be made as to what represents the final design concept. This should be clearly indicated in the presentation and report.
• Reality can make it difficult to create a truly exceptional idea. "Cartoon" type ideas may appear novel but may not be possible to realize or may not offer the advantages that will justify the cost of implementing the idea.
• In order for the idea to develop into a realistic workable design, physical aspects such as size, mass, and shape as well as the designs suitability of purpose, ability to manufacture, marketability and cost all must be satisfied for a design to be excellent.
• New problems (challenges) in a proposed design are identified and are beginning to be solved.
• The final design should solve the problem outlined in the problem identification.

Level 4

• Several of the challenges identified in the process of designing the part have been addressed and resolved or solutions proposed.
• The design should be realistic, often simple or simplified, efficient and useful or desirable.
• Where practical the design should make use of standardized or existing materials or systems.
• The final design should meet the requirements outlined in the problem identification.
