PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION - ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

Thinking / Inquiry PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION	A category for the competition has been selected and indicated.	Level 1 + There is a statement of the problem(s) to be solved by the design. Indicators

Level 1

• The category for the competition must be clearly indicated.

Level 2

• The statement should define a problem not a solution. Sometimes students mistakenly describe what it is that they are going to design. At this point keep your options open and describe the problem that you are going to attempt to solve.

Level 3

• The scope of the design refers to what level of depth (detail) or which specific design area will be your focus. The following are examples (you may concentrate on one or several of these aspects of design);
  • system design (what are the components of the design and what do they need to do)
  • spatial design (shape)
  • human interface (controls, ergonomics, how someone may use the design)
  • detail design
  • visual design (appearance, colour, balance, shade, identification, etc.)
  • functional design (mechanisms fastening)
  • structural design (strength)
  • materials selection

Level 4

• The requirements (performance specification) should indicate what the final design should be able to do. It should not describe a final design.
• The best requirements should be able to be satisfied by more than one solution. They should be general in nature and not point to a specific solution.
