Level 1

• When developing a design idea, questions arise about that idea which may require research and or testing. You may wish to research; existing designs, existing and/or standard component specifications, ergonomic information, materials properties, fastening methods, mass properties, requirements, battery life ....and the list is endless. Sources of research may include; Internet searches, magazine articles, interviews with knowledgeable persons, surveys, measurements, vendor information, textbooks, handbooks, library resources and/or many other sources.

Level 2

• Research is summarized in the body of your report. This summary briefly explains what it is that you are trying to find out with research, how you conducted the research (briefly) and what you found out. No reader wants to go through all of the raw data of your research. If you wish details of the research can be appended.

Level 3

• With so many different aspects of research, (see level 1 description) there is no reason to limit it to one approach.
• The research should be pertinent to the design question, scope or specifications.

Level 4

• Your design should progress to incorporate some of the things you found out in your research.
