INDICATORS

Concept Generation Design File

Level 1

• You should hand in a design file containing rough sketches and brief notes about your design ideas. This may be a group of rough sketches in a file folder or stapled together.
• At least four different design ideas should be identified in the file.

Level 2

• To make a rational decision a list of criterion should be developed. This is a list of what issues you think are important for the design. (performance, visual, cost, ease of fabrication etc.)
• Often a tab format can be used to determine which design is selected. A weighted numbering system can be created which validates a winner.
• Some documentation validating the chosen design should be handed in.

Level 3

• The chosen design can always be improved. You may consider improvement to;
  • the ease of use
  • selection of materials
  • use of standard parts
  • ease of fabrication
  • simplicity, reduction of the number of parts
  • integration of desirable features from other designed
  • mounting or location
  • integration of desirable features from other designs
  • visual design
  • reduce the risk of the design not working as intended
• A final rough sketch and description should be handed in for this level to be achieved.

Level 4

• The final design should effectively solve the problem.
• The final design should be efficient and cost effective compared to other designs.
• The final design should be acceptable to the customer of the design.
• The final design should be buildable and functional.
• The final design should not create new problems which may be greater then the problem which was to be solved in the first place.

Concept Presentation

Level 1

• Presentation media may be on paper (e.g.. a report) or on the computer (e.g.. PowerPoint or slide show) or live (e.g.. student presentation in front of the class) or a combination of these formats as instructed by your instructor.

Level 2

• A presentation should be organized into;
  • an introduction - introduce what you will be presenting, the problem, an argument , a solution
  • a body - make your points, present your design
  • a closing - convince the audience to do some action to accept your design.
• Visuals may include; drawings, CAD drawings, sketches, graphs, slides etc. in 2D or 3D

Level 3

• You should convince your audience that the design problem(s) that you are trying to solve are relevant and that the design idea will solve these problems.
• The audience should have a clear idea of what the design idea is.

Level 4

• Your design proposed should appear to have a high probability of working.
• Your visuals should be consistent in quality and style.
• The presentation should go smoothly;
  • timing is appropriate
  • visuals are appropriate
  • everyone can hear
  • there is an appropriate amount of energy and enthusiasm
