RESEARCH AND PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION - ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION	A category for the competition has been selected and indicated	Level 1 + A clear statement of the problem(s) to be solved by the design.	Level 1&2+ A list of requirements is included.(performance specification) Constraints which may be worked within are indicated.	Level 1&2&3+ Requirements are general in nature and do not point to a specific solution. Problem is realistic and marketable - people may be willing to pay for the design.	12 marks
RESEARCH	Some thoughts about existing designs.	Research has been conducted and presented from at least three sources.	Level 2+ Research should be properly reported and referenced.	Level 2&3 + Possibilities for your new design should be supported by research.	8 marks

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

Level 2

• The statement should define the problem(s), not the solution.

Level 3

• The requirements could be physical requirements, human/social requirements and or environmental requirements. A well done list of requirements should be a "yardstick" which could be used to evaluate a design to see if it is a good one. In the next section when you are coming up with design ideas you will ask the question, "Does this design meet the requirements which I have set out in my performance specification.

Level 4

• A good definition of a problem will have several possible solutions which could be developed. In the next section you will be required to design several solutions to the problem which you have defined. The job will be to pick the best ones and develop them into a great design idea.
• An excellent problem identification will recognize an opportunity in a situation. Perhaps peoples attitudes have changed to require a new product or service to be required. Perhaps new technology infrastructure or availability of a new technology will allow the possibility of a new design or an improvement to an old one. Often several ideas from existing designs could be integrated together in a new way.

RESEARCH

Level 2

• Sources may include the following: Internet search, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, library books, cd ROM's, product catalogues, observation including your experience written as anecdotal records, measurements or existing designs(size, time, mass etc.), visiting vendors of products, interviews, surveys and ergonomic (HFE) data.

Level 3

• The body of your report should include a very brief summary of what you found out during your research. Drawings should be attached and numbered, and supporting documentation should be appended. Any figures and appendices should be referred to in the body of the document . 
• The sources should be properly referenced in the bibliography.

Level 4

• Research about new technologies or technological infrastructure can open the possibility for design change or improvement. If a design is to be an integration of existing designs then the existing designs should be researched.
