PRELIMINARY CONCEPTS AND IDEAS - ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

CREATIVE IDEA GENERATION	A suitable idea has been presented which attempts to solve the design problem.	Level 1 + At least two other good alternative ideas have been considered	Level 1&2+ Best ideas show signs of development and improvement	Level 1&2&3+ Ideas are exceptional, well thought out, suitable and perhaps novel unique and /or marketable. There are a variety of methods used to get to the chosen solution which are well documented	16 marks
DECISION	A decision about the final design has been made and noted in the report.	Level 1 + The decision is reasonable.	Level 1+2+ The reasons for the decision is well presented and clear.	Level 1+2+3+ There is well documented support for the decision made.	4 marks

INDICATORS

CREATIVE IDEA GENERATION

Level 1

• This should be indicated by a brief description in the body of the report and an attached sketch.

Level 2

• Appended original sketches of ideas should be included. Each distinct idea should be described in the body of the report and sketches attached or appended referred to.

Level 3

• There should be evidence of the idea being improved from the time that the decision about the concept was taken to the time the idea is presented.
• Sometimes an idea is just a concept. To achieve a level 3 the idea becomes realistic and develops into a workable design. The problems (challenges) presented in the previous section as well as any new ones which have come up along the way are being resolved.

Level 4

• Attached or appended brainstorming, system Breakdown diagrams, and/or mind mapping diagrams should be included and referred to in the body of the document.

DECISION

Level 2

• The design decision should be realistic and attempt to solve the problem(s) identified in the previous section.

Level 3

• A brief description or points can indicate the rational for a decision.

Level 4

• This may include a tabulation (often in chart form) of Pro's and Con's for different designs. Sometimes a grading system is developed by students to justify a decision.
