THINKING / INQUIRY

Level 1

• To fully define a project or assignment it is often helpful to determine what information is given, and what is required to be completed or accomplished.
• Often it helps to make a list of challenges which must be overcome or things which are not fully understood.

Level 2

• "There is more than one way to skin a cat." What possible resources are at your disposal to effectively overcome challenges and solve problems. Perhaps you could try to utilize some of the following resources;
  • Solve problems collaboratively with other students.
  • Use trial and error (when it is safe to do so).
  • Utilize help files on the computer.
  • Refer to your notebook and review lessons.
  • Review the instructions for the assignment .
  • Pay attention in class.
• If you get stuck it is important to complete as much as possible. Try looking at other aspects of the project. Is there anything that can be completed while you are working on resolving a different challenge. Know exactly what it is that is an obstacle to progressing with the project or assignment.
• Request help from the instructor. The help is most effective if you have made some effort to determined what it is that you need to know, and if the concern is common to others in the class.

Level 3

• Analysis is an effective technique often used to overcome challenges. Analysis is the process of breaking down a overwhelming larger problem into several resolvable smaller ones.
• You have been able to focus on the challenges at hand and overcome them.

Level 4

• A high degree of thinking skills and effectiveness is often characterized by;
  • a student understanding the connection or extension of the content of the assignment to other problems. (perhaps bonus work if available)
  • achieving in a shorter period of time.
  • exhibiting mentoring behavior; helping others.

APPLICATION

Select Components,Simulation,Breadboard

Level 1

• Resistors and capacitors should be selected in conjunction with iterative calculations in order to get the desired output characteristics.

Level 2

• Calculations should be correct.

Level 3

• The resultant simulated waveform should compare to the calculated time high, time low, period and frequency.

Level 4

• The cycle that the LED flashes should compare to the calculated and simulated values.

APPLICATION

Printed Circuit Board Fabrication

Level 1

• Check the circuit connections against the schematic.
• Components should have appropriate mounting pads.

Level 2

• This must be done with all safety precautions and rules followed.

Level 3

• Circuit must work.

Level 4

• The completed PCB circuit should have the following characteristics;
  • components appear well spaced and aligned
  • components "lay down" and do not expose long bare leads
  • minimum of jumper wires
  • optimum use of space on the PCB (small as possible)
  • no "after completion fixes" (scraped copper traces, added in wire jumpers, creative drilling and component placement)
  • wire traces have rounded corners, are even in thickness (where appropriate) and are appropriately spaced.
  • large empty areas filled in black
  • circuit appears "clean" and professional

COMMUNICATION

Format of Calculations and Simulations

Level 1

• The calculation should be complete and handed in with your name on.

Level 2

• The simulation should be complete and print outs of the virtual oscilloscope included.

Level 3

• Format of calculations should be correct including
  • a title
  • your name
  • the date
  • any assumptions or given data clearly indicated
  • equal signs aligned vertically
  • algebraic correctness
  • underlined answers
• The oscilloscope trace should be adjusted to a suitable scale for reading. The left and right cursor bars should be adjusted to indicate the on and off time of the trace.

Level 4

• Margins should be put on the calculation page(s).
• Indicate the page number and total number of pages.
• Calculations should be clearly written, well spaced. Sub headings should be used to allow the marker to follow what is being calculated.
• Diagrams should be used where appropriate to provide clarity.

COMMUNICATION

Format of Records Required to Fabricate Project

Level 1

• Schematic Diagram should have a border and title block. Your name, the date, and the title of the drawing should be on the title block.
• The title should match the file name used to save the schematic.
• MultiSim is recommended.

Level 2

• The Bill Of Material must include a column for; Item, QTY, Part Number and Description only. It does not require Details, Cost or Vendor information.

Level 3

• The PCB mask drawing shall be printed out with the specified border and title.
• The title should be the same as the the filename of the Vectorworks file.

Level 4

• The Parts Placement drawing shall be printed out with the specified border and title.
• The title should be the same as the the filename of the Vectorworks file.

COMMUNICATION

Level 4

• The description should indicate the input, process, output and power supply requirements of the circuit.
