Late or Missed Evaluations and Requests to Update Marks

What To Do About Late or Missed Evaluations

Consideration will be given for any late or missed evaluations (tests and assignments) in Technological Design and Computer Engineering courses at Colonel By Secondary School. Depending on the reason and nature of the evaluation which is missed or late assignment the following status may result. (or combination of several of these)
  • a make up evaluation may be given
  • due date may be extended
  • an omit may be granted (evaluation will not be factored into grade)
  • mark on evaluation may be reduced
  • a mark of zero may be assigned

The decision as to which of these may eventuate will be based on Ottawa Carleton District School Board - Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting Manual (excerpts contained in this link). This includes policy for Academic Fraud (cheating). You may also wish to refer to Ottawa Carleton District School Board Student Achievement and Evaluation Policy.

Typically when an evaluation has been missed or is late a mark of zero is entered. It is the responsibility of the student to see that the evaluation is considered for a mark other than zero. If a student has not completed an assignment at the due date or has missed an assessment then they should complete the actions on the following checklist;

What to Do If You Have Missed and Assessment Checklist

  • notify the teacher as soon as possible preferably before due date
  • complete the request for Request for Consideration of Late or Missed Assignment(s) Form and print it out
  • print out rubric or marking scheme if available
  • negotiate status and new due date with teacher
  • complete work (if required)
  • estimate mark
  • hand in directly to teacher do not leave on desk or anywhere else.

Request to Upgrade an Existing Mark

Students who feel strongly that they are able to demonstrate a higher level of achievement on an assignment than they achieved at the time of evaluation are encouraged (in some cases) improve their work and resubmit it for reevaluation. This is especially for situations where the mark given may not reflect the actual ability of the student and especially applicable to major assignments.

Examples of this are;

  • where a student has extenuating circumstances which cause them to have less time or be distracted during an assignment, certain learning disabilities
  • a decision early in a project which causes some problems such as choosing a project which is too large or complex
  • students who were motivated to progress in the assignment after the evaluation date and have done so
  • or any other genuine reason.

This consideration is not for situations and generally will be declined for cases in which are attempting to compensate for a historical lack of dedication or not excused attendance problem

Examples of requests which are likely to be declined for consideration include;

  • situations where students do not completed enough work during the school year and decide to resubmit assignments in order to pass near the end of the year
  • where students are competing for top class mark
  • where students collaborate with other students and consider submitting work modeled on or based on feedback from other students work
  • or any other reason judged to be less that genuine.

What to Do If You Want an Assessment Upgraded Checklist

  • complete the request for Request Resubmit an Assignment(s) for Mark Upgrade Form and print it out
  • print out rubric or marking scheme if available
  • negotiate status and new due date with teacher
  • complete work (if required)
  • hand in directly to teacher do not leave on desk or anywhere else.
