- This lesson is in reference to the website for the Canadian
Intellectual Property Office. Log into
- You will notice the 5 types of intellectual property protected
by Canadian Law listed on the left hand side of the page. Select
'Trade-marks' (or choose the link below) to enter the Trademarks
page.

- Select 'A guide to Trade-marks' under Getting Started
- Select 'Introduction' and read 'Your Identity in the
Marketplace'.
- Select 'THE BASICS' and survey the information.
- Select 'Making Sure Your Trade-mark Can be
Registered' and survey the information.
- Select 'What's in a Name' under Getting Started
- Select "Trade-mark Forms' under Printable Forms
- Print out 'Format 4 - Application for Registration of
a Proposed Trade-mark'
- Select 'Instruction for Format 4' and review the
information.
- From the information on the site, complete the following
questions in your notes.
- What is a trade mark?
- List 5 forms of intellectual property which are recognized
under Canadian law.
- What is the difference between a trade name and a
Trade-mark?
- How do you register a trade mark? How much does it cost?
- How long does the protection of a Trade-mark last and how
often does a Trade-mark have to be renewed?
- Does a Trade-mark registered in Canada automatically receive
protection in other countries?
- Give at least three reasons and examples of each why a
Trade-mark could not be registered.
- How many Trade-marks is it estimated that you will see in a
day?
- What $ figure has is associated with the brand 'IBM' in
2003?
- Approximately how many applications for Trade-marks does the
CIPO receive annually?
- List two reasons why you would search the 'Canadian
Trade-marks Database'.
- Complete the 'Application for Registration of a Proposed
Trade-mark' for your personal logo. (including the required
attached drawing) You can use Colonel Bys Address if you want;
