Preliminary Ideas, Concepts and Decision

This section of the report should be a word processed summary of the concepts and ideas which you came up with, investigated and developed. Reasonable sketches of your ideas should be included as figures in the attachment section of your report. See the textbook "Design and Problem Solving in Technology", by Hutchinson and Karsnitz, Chapter 4 for information on how to document your work. You may wish to keep all or a selection of your unsanitized idea making sketches and include them in an appendix. I highly encourage you to do this. It may not seem like good ideas or well drawn sketches but it is highly valuable for others to see where the design has progressed. Figures and Appendices should be completed on A, and B size sheets and if necessary on a C size sheet. See How to Fold Papers in a Report for folding instructions for B and C size sheets.

You may find that your thinking and observation may be best transcribed onto paper by using one of the following techniques;

See your lesson notes and textbook "Design and Problem Solving in Technology", by Hutchinson and Karsnitz, Chapter 3 for information.

There should be several (at least three) distinguishably different designs presented which will solve your design problem. You must then choose which design concept to pursue as a final design. Sometimes this decision is justified in a written statement and often supported with a tabulation of Pro's and Con's.

A sketch and a brief clear description of the final design choice should be clearly indicated in report.
