FSF 4UE - Course Outline

Grade Twelve Enriched Core French

IB2 French B

Course Description:

This enriched French course is for students in IB year 2. As in FSF 4U, this course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of French-language skills. Students will consolidate their oral skills as they discuss literature, culture, and current issues. They will read a variety of texts and will write a formal essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course. In addition to work normally done in FSF 4U, this course meets the academic, culture and social objectives of Language B as set out by the IB program. Therefore, the teaching of the four language skills will be integrated into the study of the following themes: exploring change, exploring groups and exploring leisure. A wide selection of authentic texts from both literary and periodical sources will be used. During the course, students will be required to develop a dossier of their own work and readings that will serve as a basis for discussion and evaluation. They will learn to write clearly in a variety of forms including commentaries, summaries, formal letters and speeches.

Oral Communication
By the end of the course students will :
· respond in a variety of ways to a wide range of media works
· express and justify ideas and opinions in self-directed conversations and discussions on a variety of issues
· make oral presentations on a variety of topics
· use appropriate language conventions during oral communication activities

Reading
· read and demonstrate an understanding of a range of literary and information texts
· apply critical thinking as they read
· identify and understand language conventions used in their reading materials

Writing
· express their ideas and opinions logically and coherently in written texts
· create a variety of texts, selecting the appropriate form and language to suit the purpose and the audience
· use correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in their written work

Reprise is a workbook based on grammar rules. Students who don't already own this book should purchase it.

Language Structures

Nouns and pronouns : possessive pronouns, interrogative pronoun lequel, use of the pronoun on to reflect the English passive, relative pronoun lequel.

Verbs : tense sequence in past narration, use of the subjonctif présent, verbs of perception followed by the infinitive, sequence of present and past tenses with les expressions temporelles, formation and use of the subjonctif passé, formation and use of the infinitif passé, faire causatif.

Prepositions and conjunctions : peut-être vs peut-être que

Negation : use and postion of ne….jamais, ne…rien, ne…nulle part, ne …personne, ne…plus, ne…aucun, negative invinitives.

Evaluation:

Students will do their IB oral examination at the end of February and the written examination in May.
