SBI 3U GENETIC CONTINUITY
CHAPTER 4 AND 5 REVIEW
You should be able to:
- Recognized the DNA replication for cell division occurs during interphase.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the process and importance of mitosis (e.g. cell division, and the phases of mitosis)
- Draw and label diagrams of the four stages of mitosis.
- Explain the terms: diploid, haploid, 2n and n number of chromosomes, homologous chromosomes, synapsis and tetrad.
- State the main purpose of the process of meiosis.
- Explain the process of meiosis in terms of the replication and movement of chromosomes.
- Draw and label diagrams of the many stages of meiosis.
- Explain the number of chromosomes in cells before, during, and after mitosis and meiosis.
- Compare the processes of mitosis and meiosis.
- Describe the procedure and state the results of Mendel’s monohybrid crosses that allowed him to deduce how characteristics are inherited and formulate his first law of heredity: the law of segregation
- Define or explain the following terms: gene, allele, homozygous, heterozygous, hybrid, dominant, recessive, genotype and phenotype.
- Explain, using Mendellian genetics the concepts of dominance, co-dominance, incomplete dominance and recessiveness.
- Give appropriate lettered symbols to represent alleles and genotypes.
- Describe the phenotype given a genotype. Determine the genotype(s) given a phenotype.
- Determine the kinds of sex cells that a individual can produce.
- Predict the outcome of various genetic crosses.
- Solve problems involving monohybrid crosses using a Punnett square.
- Describe the procedure and state the results of Mendel’s dihybrid crosses that allowed him to deduce how characteristics are inherited and formulate his second law of heredity: the law of independent assortment.
- Determine the kinds of sex cells dihybrid individuals can produce.
- Solve problems involving dihybrid crosses using a Punnett square.
- State the characteristics and solve problems for incomplete dominance or codominance.
